Will my child be in a recital?
No. ITM is focused on skill building and not on performance. You will get to see your child present what they’ve learned mid-way through the year and at the end of the school year during visitation days. Older students (8 and up) can audition to be in Oyo Dance Company’s children’s show if they wish.
My child is non-binary. What should they wear to class? Will their pronouns be respected?
Students can choose from either dress code option. One option is traditionally feminine and one is traditionally masculine, but students may choose whichever option feels most comfortable to them. All ITM instructors and staff use students’ preferred names and pronouns.
What should my child wear?
Dress codes for different class levels can be found on the studio dress code page .
Can I watch my child in class?
No. We ask parents and caregivers to wait in the lobby area of the studio. Having parents observing class is distracting to the students and the instructor. If you have questions about your child’s progress, please set up a time to speak with their teacher.
What is the difference between curriculum-based and performance-based programs?
Some schools focus their classes and work on preparing a set routine for a recital. ITM focuses student work on building solid technique. Studying foundational skills enables students to be very versatile performers, should they choose to go that route. Performance-based classes can limit acquisition of basic skills in favor of memorizing a routine. We believe that a curriculum-based program provides students with the best foundation for whatever artistic expression they choose!
My child is in middle school and wants to start learning to dance. It looks like the classes for their age are for more advanced students. Can they still take a class at ITM?
Yes. Please contact the program director to discuss the best option for your child’s age and skill set.
My child took dance at another studio and was bullied by other children because they have a larger body. They are worried it might happen again. How does ITM handle such situations?
ITM has a strict body positivity policy. We do not tolerate talk of weight or size inside the studio. Every class is available to every student that has the required skills, and all instructors and staff have completed training on the importance of body-positive/body-neutral language and teaching strategies. Costumes and attire can be custom fitted or constructed by our in-house costume shop to fit any body of any size.
My child has mobility challenges. Can they still take dance class?
Yes, absolutely! ITM is committed to making everyone feel welcome and fully included in class. Please schedule a time to speak with the program director and your child’s teacher to talk about how we can best work with them. Costumes and attire can be custom fitted or constructed by our in-house costume shop to accommodate any accessibility needs.
