What is Massage Therapy and Bodywork?
Massage Therapy encourages the parasympathetic nervous system to function in order to encourage natural healing. Many people, due to pain and hectic lifestyles, function in the “fight or flight” (sympathetic nervous system) mode. This fatigues muscles and weakens the immune system. Healing cannot occur as well or as quickly in this state.
Massage Therapy also increases circulation by 3x – 4x the normal rate and releases endorphins and enkephalins, the body’s natural “feel good” hormones. Massage aids in stress reduction, and provides relief from muscular pain and spasms, and helps diminish scars/scar tissue. Women in all stages of pregnancy can benefit from massage therapy. Research has shown the benefits of medical massage therapy in the treatment of fibromayalgia, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, TMJD, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, and neuralgias.
Persons with uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clots, history of blood clots, blood thinners, or circulatory problems should consult their physician before receiving Massage Therapy.
What are the types of Bodywork offered at ITM?
Medical Massage
Medical Massage is designed to address a specific problem or injury. Techniques used in a medical massage session may include myofacial releases, deep cross fiber friction, ETPS, positional releases, trigger point therapy and sound therapy.
~ 1/2 hour or 1 hour sessions are available.
Therapeutic Touch
This is a form of energy work that provides a sense of deep relaxation and ease of being. TT can also decrease physical and emotional disorder, pain, and anxiety.
~ 1 hour or 11/2 hour sessions are available.
How is medical massage different from a welness or relaxation massage?
Medical massage has the goal of correcting a problem involving your muscle tissue, and can be part of an injury recovery plan or may address chronic issues like lower back pain, headaches, or planar fasciitis. A wellness or relaxation massage is designed to relieve stress, sooth muscles, and improve circulation.
Will my insurance cover medical massage?
Possibly. Different plans cover different things, so you should check with your insurer. Some employers may allow you to pay for medical massage services using your Flexible Spending or Healthcare Savings Account. Even though ITM does not do insurance billing, we can provide invoices or other information that you can use to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
